📘 Fiche de cours

L'essentiel du cours

Le Sustainable Development (Développement Durable) est un concept qui vise à répondre aux besoins du présent sans compromettre la capacité des générations futures à répondre aux leurs.

1. The Three Pillars (Les trois piliers) :

  • Environmental protection : Preserving natural resources, reducing pollution, and protecting biodiversity.
  • Social equity : Ensuring health, education, and justice for all people.
  • Economic viability : Promoting growth that does not destroy the environment.

2. Key Vocabulary (Vocabulaire clé) :

  • Renewable energy : Solar, wind, and water energy (inexhaustible).
  • Non-renewable energy : Coal, oil, and gas (limited/exhaustible).
  • Global warming : The increase in Earth's temperature due to greenhouse gases.
  • Carbon footprint : The amount of carbon dioxide released by a person or organization.
  • To preserve / To conserve : Protéger/conserver la nature.
  • Pollution (air, water, soil) : Contamination de l'environnement.

3. Grammar Tools (Outils grammaticaux utiles) :

  • Expressing Cause & Effect :
    • $Cause \rightarrow Effect$: "We use solar energy to reduce pollution."
    • $Effect \leftarrow Cause$: "Pollution increases due to the use of fossil fuels."
  • Conditionals (Type 1) : Pour exprimer des conséquences réelles.
    • $If + \text{Present Simple}, \text{will} + \text{Infinitive}$
    • Example: "If we recycle more, we will save the planet."

Méthodes à maîtriser

1. Writing an Essay (Rédiger une rédaction) :

  • Introduction : Present the topic (Hook) and state the problem (Thesis statement).
  • Body Paragraphs : Use connectors (First, Moreover, In addition, However) to present arguments and examples.
  • Conclusion : Summarize your main points and give a final recommendation or opinion.

2. Expressing Purpose (Exprimer le but) :

  • Use: to + infinitive / in order to + infinitive / so as to + infinitive.
  • Example: "We plant trees so as to absorb $CO_2$."

Exemples corrigés

Exemple 1 : Transformation de phrase (Cause/Effect)

  • Question : Rewrite using "due to": "The climate is changing because people burn fossil fuels."
  • Correction : "The climate is changing due to the burning of fossil fuels." (Note: due to est suivi d'un groupe nominal, pas d'une proposition complète).

Exemple 2 : Conditionnel (Conséquence)

  • Question : Complete: "If we (not/protect) ________ the oceans, many species (die) ________ out."
  • Correction : "If we do not protect the oceans, many species will die out."

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Confusion entre "Renewable" et "Non-renewable" : Ne confondez pas les énergies propres (soleil) avec les énergies polluantes (pétrole).
  • Erreur de grammaire avec "Because" vs "Because of" :
    • Faux : "Because the pollution..." $\rightarrow$ Vrai : "Because of the pollution..." (Because + sujet + verbe / Because of + nom).
  • Vocabulaire : Ne dites pas "make the pollution", dites "cause pollution" ou "increase pollution".

Which of the following is a renewable energy source?

❓ Questions fréquentes

What is the main goal of sustainable development?

The main goal is to meet the needs of the current generation without damaging the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It focuses on balancing economic growth, social well-being, and environmental protection.

💡 À retenir : It is about balance between "now" and "the future".

What is the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy?
  1. Renewable energy comes from natural sources that never run out, such as solar, wind, and hydro energy.
  2. Non-renewable energy comes from sources that will eventually run out, like coal, oil, and natural gas.

💡 À retenir : Renewable = infinite; Non-renewable = limited.

How can we reduce our carbon footprint?

We can reduce our carbon footprint by:

  1. Using public transport or bicycles instead of cars.
  2. Conserving energy at home (turning off lights).
  3. Recycling waste and reducing plastic use.
  4. Eating more local and seasonal food.

💡 À retenir : Small daily actions lead to big environmental changes.

What does "Global Warming" mean?

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average temperature. It is mainly caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

💡 À retenir : It leads to melting ice caps and extreme weather.

Can you give examples of "Green" actions?

Green actions include:

  • Planting trees (reforestation).
  • Using solar panels.
  • Recycling paper, glass, and plastic.
  • Reducing water consumption.

💡 À retenir : "Green" means environmentally friendly.

What is the role of recycling in sustainable development?

Recycling helps to:

  1. Reduce the amount of waste in landfills.
  2. Save natural resources (like wood or metal).
  3. Save energy used in manufacturing new products from raw materials.

💡 À retenir : It turns waste into new resources.

What is the importance of biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of all living things on Earth. It is important because it maintains the balance of ecosystems, provides food, medicine, and ensures the survival of all species, including humans.

💡 À retenir : No biodiversity = unstable planet.

How do greenhouse gases affect the environment?

Greenhouse gases (like $CO_2$) trap heat in the atmosphere. This "greenhouse effect" warms the planet, causing climate change, rising sea levels, and more frequent natural disasters.

💡 À retenir : Too much $CO_2$ = too much heat.

What is the difference between "environment" and "environmental"?
  • Environment is a noun (le nom) : "We must protect the environment."
  • Environmental is an adjective (l'adjectif) : "We face many environmental problems."

💡 À retenir : Use the adjective to describe a noun.

  2. Non-renewable energy (énergie non-renouvelable) hiya li katssala, b7al lpetrol w lfo7m (coal).
